St. John the Evangelist
Kenneth Murta was the head of Sheffield University’s School of Architecture and valued practice’s role in the academy. This extension was designed in collaboration with Jim Hall. The addition takes advantage of the topography of the Hyde Park area of Sheffield, its slight cantilevered forms made more dramatic by the sloping churchyard and retaining wall to the main road. Adopting contemporary chamfered corners and a truncated square trapezoidal roof, the scheme sits starkly against its host. The yellow brick is a concession to the sandstone of the main church, but the overall composition has to be read as deliberately distinct from the original building.
