Mainstream Modern is a resource, an archive and a live project.

It records the fieldwork photography and archival study that supports the main body of my academic work.

I write about architecture of the twentieth century and its relationship to society, part of this includes visiting buildings and this site provides a digital space to share part of my research.

Mainstream Modern is a living and growing resource for everyone

The idea of mainstream modern is an inclusive one that attempts to celebrate the mundane and municipal alongside the marvellous. At some point in mid-1950s Britain, almost all new architecture became modern, neo-classical and vernacular styles faded from production and, in the long aftermath of war, swathes of construction transformed the country in a sweeping manner not seen since the industrial revolution. As both the special and not-so-special artefacts of this period are increasingly altered, adapted or demolished I have attempted to capture and record those within my reach and to share them here.
