Police Station

One of the last bespoke Police Stations by the Dept. It is described in the County Architect's Report as having 'Cubist tendencies'. One could argue it is after James Stirling. George Hall and Colin WIlson trained with Stirling at Liverpool and he was a regular visitor to their office when returning to the city. It occupies a corner site with some presence and comfortably folds in on itself in a manner that mirrors the ad-hoc terraced streets behind. This building sits more comfortably with the output of Hall O'Donahue & Wilson than that of Lancashire County Architects, especially when one considers their Canning Place Fire Station and Storrington Avenue Fire Training Centre, Liverpool, designed with city architect Ronald Bradbury. The use of a plinth and a colonnade affords a deliberate civic air to the building, whilst the hard angular forms reinforce a sense of robust protection.
