Ambulance Station
This slightly clunky piece of municipal modernism has all the hallmarks of the Festival Style and sits with other works by Borough Architect at the time, Sidney Richmond – the first phase of the Civic Centre for example. Its site was chosen due to proximity to the hospital. The curving profiled tower to the front with overhanging lid is typical of the way that art deco architectural languages stuttered towards the full-blown adoption of modernism in the UK over a drawn out period. The garages to the rear have a lovely series of barrel vaults. The original signage is just about hanging on, to the left of the hardwood entrance doors. Modest, mundane and mainstream.
