St. Luke's Church

Judging by the sheer number of churches they designed Burles Newton and Partners must have been well allied to the Roman Catholic church in England. They were appointed to design St. Luke’s in 1963 and construction took place between 1966 and 1969. The steel framed structure with load bearing gable walls in dark brick was intended to create a free span and enable unimpeded views of the sanctuary. The dramatic roof form was originally copper clad and timber lined, but only the lining remains. A cantilevered gallery to the west end has an organ above set into the wall. The almost rectangular plan is angled at its east end. A number of alterations have taken place during its life, most notably the addition of several stained glass windows by Roy Coomber in 2002-2003. The architects also designed the adjacent presbytery, completed in 1975.
